The Doll’s Festival, Hinamatsuri is on March 3nd. Hina literally means dolls in English. It is a celebration for young girls and on this special day, family prays for the health of young girls. Usually parents who have young girls set up Hinaningyo, hina dolls, at home as part of celebration. You will see peach blossoms, rice cakes. It is said that this celebration started in the Edo period.

My girlfriend’s parents bought the whole setting of hinaningyo, which took up space in her room. But they were so elaborate and beautiful. We call the main dolls “Odairi-sama” which is a prince, and Ohinasama, a princess. Hinamatsuri (Doll’s Festival) is also called “Momo no sekku (peach festival)” because this festival is held during the peach blossom season on the old lunar calendar.
