Vagina artist is still going through this

I wrote about this Japanese artist who was prosecuted for violating obscenity laws. This case drew much media attention especially from western countries.

Megumi Igarashi AKA rokudenashiko (good for nothing girl) decided to organize crowdfunding to create a kayal shaped like her genitalia.  I could not personally understand the motive as I am the kind of person who wants to play safe and don’t like doing anything too controversial or provocative.

That is why Megumi Igarashi is a true artist. A good artist does have to take risks at times, so she did. She scanned her own genitalia using a 3D printer and then disseminated the data to her supporters who donated over 3,000 yen to support her project.

..And Ms. Igarashi was arrested for violating the Japanese law somehow.

Ms. Igarashi didn’t think she was doing anything wrong because female genitalia is often seen negatively especially in Japan. So she wanted to empower women and wanted to de-stigmatize this.

She continues to maintain her innocence. She indeed did not do anything wrong. But a prosecutor countered that Igarashi carries great criminal responsibility for what she has done.

Her North American publicist is confident that this legal issues will not affect her work. Ms. Igarashi is more than ever to feel motivated to make more profound art and she is not willing to give into the Japanese government’s bias against female genitalia.

This whole case throws anybody who knows the size of Japanese pornography industry, which could have a $20 billion a year impact.

But the genitals have to be censored in all Japanese porn. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but it is what it is.

“I had no idea why I had to be arrested and detained because I don’t believe my vagina is anything obscene. I was determined I would never yield to police power,” Igarashi told the media.
