I think Sumo is the most unhealthy sports..well, there are risky sports..such as boxing and street fighting but if you are not familiar with sumo, you may be surprised with what sumo wrestlers look like. Sumo is a competitive wrestling sport where a rikishi (wrestler) tries to force another wrestler out of a circular ring (dohyo) or to touch the ground with anything other than the soles of the feet. All sumo wrestlers are obese, and Sumo is still one of the most popular traditional sports in Japan. It’s basically a wrestling game so two obese sumo wrestlers collide and throw each other around the straw ring at the Sumo Stadium while audiences are screaming out of excitement. You wonder what made them become so big yet strong enough to do what they do-wrestling.

If you want to become a sumo wrestler, you must gain a lot of weight. Most Sumo wrestlers weigh more than 140 kg, and it is said that they consume almost 8000 kilocalories a day, which is more than twice calories an average Japanese adult make take. Sumo is only for males. An interesting thing is that Sumo wrestlers are celebrities in Japan, and because of their fame and status, many of them end up marrying beautiful models and other famous actresses in Japan.

Sumo wrestlers all live share the same house and eat specific diet to gain weight. Since there are no any weight divisions as seen in other sports, you want to be as big as you can as a sumo wrestler. What Sumo wrestlers eat is called “Chankonabe” (ちゃんこ鍋). It is a soup served in a giant por and the soup consists of tofu, chicken, fish, beef and vegetables, and the ingredients depend on which stable these wrestlers live in and it’s flexible.

I did not know this but Sumo wrestlers have to go above and beyond in order to gain certain weight so that they can compete with other big sumo wrestlers. They do a lot of exercise and eat a lot..and also sleep after eating to they can gaine weight faster. I have to admit that Chankonabe looks very delicious, and some restaurants are open to serve delicious chankonabe to regular people in Japan.
