Elevator girls

I have never seen so called “elevator operators” here in the U.S. But in Japan, some department stores and event sites have elevator operators-usually women. They are dressed nicely and their job is to greet visitors coming into the elevator and press the button..and thank visitors for using their elevators and visiting the stores..I think this is a biggest waste of money if I am the store owner..but it is fairly common to have elevator woman operators.
