Japan accepts BAN!

I cannot be any happier…Although I did not know anything about dolphin drive hunting in Japan, I knew that there are people especially in the old generations who eat whales. My mother always told me that it was wrong to kill whale. These are wild mammals and they belong to the oceans. And so our family has always taught it was unethical to eat whales. Finally Japan will not continue to hunt whales for “research purposes” which are merely a disguise to continue commercial whaling since there are still some demands and they are willing to pay a lot of money. Japan had caught an astonishing number of 3600 minke whales since 2005 and it is not very clear how they are going to use whale hunting for their research..is it necessary to kill them and sell them in grocery stores? It really does not make sense!! A spokesman for Greenpeace UK, Willie MacKenzie, welcomed the ICJ’s decision “The myth that this hunt was in any way scientific can now be dismissed once and for all,” he said.

The UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that the Japanese government must halt its whaling programme in the Antarctic. It agreed with Australia, which brought the case in May 2010, that the programme was not for scientific research as claimed by Tokyo. Japan had argued that the suit brought by Australia was an attempt to impose its cultural norms on Japan. Presiding Judge Peter Tomka said the court has decided, by 12 votes to four, that Japan should withdraw all permits and licenses for whaling in the Antarctic and refrain from issuing any new ones. Well, hopefully this will stop Japan from hunting any more whales. But according to the national geographic.com, Japan says it will abide by a Monday ruling from the United Nations’ International Court of Justice ordering the nation to stop hunting whales off Antarctica. Until now, Japan has continued taking whales under a provision of the 1986 ban known as Article Eight, which allowed the killing of whales for scientific purposes. How did they do the research on whales? Did they really need to be killed before the study? What kind of study is that? I have never heard of any type of study involving whales was published in Japan. But Japan has continued to maintain that whale needed to be killed in order to obtain basic biological information about the animals….well, this just doesn’t make sense but I am so happy that they ban this and I am sure Japan will continue to take a different route to continue the practice to preserve “FOOD CULTURE”. Again young generations in Japan do not eat whales. So this is just a small group of people who are very greedy.
