How to ask questions in Japanese? We now know how to introduce ourselves, so let’s learn how to ask other people’s names! Please note that following words can be singular or plural. In Japanese, we normally do not have distinctions between singular and plural as English.

Otousan: Father

Chichi: My father (Formal. Used only for my father)

Okaasan: Mother

Ojiisan: Grandfather (Formal)

Sofu: My grandfather (Formal)

Ojiichan : Grandpa (Casual)

Obaasan: Grandmother (Formal)

Sobo: My grandmother (Formal)

Obaachan: Grandmother (Casual)

Oneesan- Older sister (Formal)

Ani- My older brother (Formal)

Oniichan- Older brother (Casual)

Imouto san- Your younger sister (Formal)

*You should not refer to your own sister as imouto san.

Imouto- Younger sister (My or your younger sister)

Otouto san- Your older brother (Formal)
