Sakura Cherry blossoms

If you have viewed my Facebook or Twitter pages regularly, you probably already know that I am a huge fan of cherry blossoms. I am missing another cherry blossom season in Japan. I didn’t think about this before, but I wrote a small article for Nihongo Ichiban. When you pay close attention the Kanji character (桜)has the Kanji character which means Woman (女).

Apparently according to Namiko Abe, who writes articles about Japan on about.com (I love her articles!), “The Kanji character” “sakura” is an image of woman wearing a hair ornament.”

There are more than 100 types of sakura in Japan, and “yamazakura” is the most common type. In Okinama, the beginning of the cherry blossom boom season is as early as January, but of course the cherry blossoms bloom as late as May in Hokkaido. Ohanami season (the cherry blossom viewing season) is very short, so if you want to do hanami, you have to do it within about one to two weeks after the beginning of the first blossoms. I really do miss going home and seeing the sakura in Japan. 🙁
