Sharp Robot Phone for $1800

Sharp invented RoboHon, an expensive smart phone that you can talk to and it essentially does not look like a smart phone. It is available for pre-order now. It will cost 198,000 yen, about $1800. It isn’t cheap but if you are looking for a one of a kind smart phone, this may work for you.

This is the first time hearing about RoBoHon but it basically has all the basic smartphone functions in a tiny robot body. I

RoBoHon is controlled by your voice and it is a small robot but you can view images and video in its head area. LTE radio is inside. And RoBoHon read messages and send a dictated reply for you, so it saves touchscreen interactions. It does not look like your typical smart phone because it walks around on two legs.

I am not sure if this is going to sell as Sharp claims. First of all, the RoboHon isn’t cheap. It will cost 198,000 yen and tax. ($1800 plus tax!)

I guess it is worth it for those who enjoy the concept of having a super cute robot that has all the basic smartphone functions and much more! The only concern that I have is that I don’t necessarily want this little guy to talk to me at work, read all the text messages as I don’t want people hearing these. Maybe I can wear a headset and communicate with RoBoHon when I am not around people.

Japanese people are fairly shy and they can’t really answer their phones while taking the bus or train so that’s another issue that Sharp has to seriously consider. But they are probably targeting specific people.

What do you think? Would you pay $1800 for RoBoHon?
