Hedgehog cafe finally opens in Tokyo

Japan loves animals. We’ve got owl cafe, cat cafe, rabbit cafe, snake themed cafe and even hawk cafe. So it is really no surprise that the first hedgehog-themed cafe was recently opened in Tokyo!

A cafe is located in the Roppongi entertainment district and the cafe has about 20-30 hedgehogs of various breeds hang out.

Visitors have to pay 1000 yen on weekdays and 1300 yen on holidays visitors can just spend an hour playing with these cutest animals carefully. They are spiky!

The only thing that kind of bothered me was when I went to the owl cafe in Tokyo. It was my first time seeing various types of owls and some looked very fierce so I didn’t even dare touching them. But their legs were chained to the woods and I just felt bad for these owls. I am sure they want to rest during the day as they are nocturnal.

Definitely these animal themed cafes provide great opportunities especially for children to get to know rare animals, learn and interact with them. At the same time, I wonder where we need to draw the line. Owls seemed like they were under stressed because of constant scrutiny and the cafe was crowded and people were trying to pet their feathers despite bird attendees instructions to pet very gently.

But I would love to go to hedgehog cafe when I next visit Japan. Hopefully soon!
