Japanese English words

Japanese has three writing systems. Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. Katakana is very interesting as it’s used for words that we took from foreign and English languages. English speakers who don’t understand Japanese would never guess what these katakana words mean.

Let’s take a look at these funny Katakana words.

1) Letaa (Letter)

2) Makudonarudo (McDonald)

3) Staabakkusu (Starbucks)

4) Kyuuto (Cute)

5) Sankyuu (Thank you)

6) Kohii (Coffee)

7) Ingrisshu (English)

8) Smaato (Smart)

These are of course just the examples and I can list these words forever.

Not only that Japanese people imported and interpreted these “foreign” words. We made these words our own..

The last word 8) Smaato and it is “Smart” and that means intelligent, clever, wise..but Japanese people often use this word “smaato” (smart) and they mean “slim” “slender”..like you have a nice body.

I am interested in learning where this meaning came from..anybody??
